What is coaching
Coaching is to help develop both myself and partner to be better reflective educators and improve learning outcomes for all. It is about share effective and meaningful practices.
Key Points from Reading
- There are four different types of coaching models.
- Collegial Coaching
- Technical Coaching
- Challenge Coaching
- Team Coaching
- Coaching is built upon trusting both the mentor and mentoree.
- Based on supporting further growth and development, not to judge others and teacher ability.
- A pre-conference - discussing with mentor what is to be observed and lesson focus.
- An observation - Observing teaching/learning/strategies as discussed in pre-conference.
- A post-conference - is discussing the outcome of the lesson which should be lead by the teacher observed. Open ended questions should be used to help the teacher observed to be a critical reflector identifying next learning steps.
- Open ended questions to help lead discussions:
- How did you feel the lesson that you taught today went?
- What do you think would happen if?
- What might you see happening in your classroom if?
- To be an effective coach it is important to develop these key skills:
- Conversation skills
- listening skills
- nonverbal language
- giving constructive feedback
- developing trusting relationships
Take away from reading
From this reading I am going to be using the Collegial Coaching model, and focus on developing open ended questioning to encourage mentoree to share their reflective feedback from lesson taught.
